Behind the Scenes: Developing the Understanding EU Platform and “Knowledge Bits”
The Understanding EU project is steadily progressing towards the launch of its online platform, designed to make European Union legislation more accessible and easier to understand for citizens across Europe.
Over the past months, project partners have been working intensively on the development of the platform’s core feature: the Digital Lexicon. This resource is being carefully structured to present key EU concepts in a clear, concise, and user-friendly way.
At the heart of the Digital Lexicon are the so-called “Knowledge Bits” – short, focused entries that break down complex topics into manageable pieces of information. Each Knowledge Bit is being developed with a strong emphasis on clarity, relevance, and accessibility, ensuring that users with different backgrounds and levels of prior knowledge can benefit from the content.
The development process follows a user-centred approach. Insights gathered from citizens and stakeholders have played a key role in shaping both the content and format of the Knowledge Bits. Early feedback highlighted common challenges such as complex terminology, dense legal language, and difficulties in navigating EU-related information. These findings have directly informed the design of the lexicon and its entries.
In parallel, work is underway on a series of explanation videos, which will complement selected Knowledge Bits. These videos aim to translate abstract concepts into engaging visual narratives, supporting different learning styles and enhancing overall understanding.
Technical development and content creation are progressing hand in hand. Partners are collaborating closely to ensure that the platform will not only provide high-quality content but also offer an intuitive and interactive user experience.
While the platform is still under development, this phase represents a crucial step in testing ideas, refining approaches, and ensuring that the final result meets the needs of its users.
The Understanding EU project continues to move forward with the shared goal of bridging the gap between EU institutions and citizens through innovative, accessible, and user-friendly digital tools.
